Yesterday on 24th October 2023 the Malawi Deaf Community, Malawi government officials, Senior Chiefs, the Clergy, media and the community in Mzimba commemorated the International Day of Sign Languages at Towvirane grounds in Mzimba District.
The Deputy Minister of Education Hon Nancy Mdoka MP was the guest of Honour who presided over the event. The day was commemorated under the theme “A World where Deaf people everywhere can Sign anywhere” in vernacular language is Chiyowoyero cha mawoko, ni jando la chitukuko chakunozgera waliyose in Chichewa; Dziko lomwe anthu a ulumali wakusamva akhonza kulumikizana ndi aliyense, paliponse, nthawi iliyonse pogwiritsa ntchito chiyankhulo cha manja.
The 2023 theme envision a world where Deaf people are seen as part of Human diversity and where national sign languages are used and cerebrated everywhere. The IDSL was sanctioned by the UN and globally cerebrated everywhere. The aim is to raise awareness on the importance of sign language as a human right.
