MANAD Holds strategic Planning Workshop for 2025-2030

The Malawi National Association of the Deaf (MANAD) recently convened a strategic planning workshop at the Liwonde Community Development Centre in Liwonde from November 28th to 29th, 2024. This critical meeting focused on drafting a roadmap to guide the organization’s operations and advocacy efforts for the period 2025-2030. The strategic plan, now in its third draft stage, is set to be finalized in an upcoming meeting.

The workshop brought together a diverse group of participants, including experienced MANAD leaders, veteran Deaf rights activists, and a new wave of passionate Deaf advocates. The purpose was to shape the organization’s strategic direction, emphasizing the importance of aligning MANAD’s goals with the Malawi 2063 Agenda, which prioritizes inclusivity, equality, and sustainable development.

A significant focus of the workshop was on advancing Deaf rights in Malawi. Discussions highlighted the need to intensify advocacy for equal access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities for the Deaf community. Participants also stressed the importance of ensuring government accountability in implementing disability-friendly policies and promoting Malawi Sign Language as an official language. This recognition would allow the Deaf community to fully participate in societal, political, and economic activities without barriers.

The workshop was made possible through technical support from Save the Children Malawi and generous funding from the Finnish Association of the Deaf, facilitated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This collaboration underscores the value of partnerships in driving impactful initiatives that benefit the Deaf community.

MANAD is now calling on local and international organizations, development partners, and well-wishers to join in supporting the implementation of this strategic plan. With adequate resources and collective effort, MANAD aims to strengthen its advocacy, empower the Deaf community, and contribute meaningfully to national development goals.

This initiative reaffirms MANAD’s unwavering commitment to championing the rights and dignity of Deaf people while creating an inclusive and equitable society in Malawi.
