Banking Without Limits: Blantyre MANAD District Tours National Bank HQ

Blantyre, March 28 – In a landmark initiative advancing financial inclusion, members of the Blantyre District Chapter of the Malawi National Association of the Deaf (MANAD) visited the National Bank of Malawi Head Office in Blantyre. The educational tour served as an eye-opener for both the Deaf community and bank officials, setting the stage for meaningful engagement toward inclusive banking services.

During the visit, the delegation was taken through various departments of the bank, gaining first-hand experience and insights into day-to-day operations. From loan application processes, customer service strategies, to financial management systems, MANAD members actively engaged in learning opportunities and asked key questions relevant to Deaf access to banking.

A highlight of the visit was a special session on leadership and business development, where National Bank staff shared practical strategies on decision-making, growth planning, and the importance of inclusivity in service delivery. The session sparked dynamic discussions on how Deaf individuals can also take leadership roles in financial and business spaces.

MANAD members used the platform to advocate for better accessibility, expressing the need for:

  • Sign language interpreters at banking halls

  • SMS-based customer support to eliminate the dependency on voice calls

  • Staff sensitization and training on Deaf culture and communication

These practical proposals aim to break the communication barriers that continue to hinder the Deaf community’s access to critical financial services.

In response, National Bank officials warmly welcomed the feedback and pledged to take concrete steps toward inclusivity. They assured the delegation that they recognize the unique needs of Deaf customers and are committed to creating a banking environment where no one is left behind.

“Accessibility is not a privilege—it’s a right,” emphasized one of the officials, adding that the bank would explore sustainable ways to integrate sign language support and other inclusive innovations.

This visit marked a transformative moment for both MANAD and National Bank, showcasing what is possible when institutions and communities collaborate. It’s a reminder that with intentional efforts and inclusive policies, banking can truly become a service for all—no matter one’s abilities.

As MANAD continues to advocate for equality, initiatives like this bring Malawi one step closer to a society where access and opportunity are universal.
