At the heart of MANAD’s mission to protect and promote the rights of the Deaf community in Malawi is our dedicated Secretariat. The Secretariat is the central hub for all of MANAD’s operations, providing leadership, coordination, and support to ensure the effective implementation of our programs and advocacy efforts.
 

Our Role and Responsibilities

The MANAD Secretariat is responsible for the following key functions:

  • Advocacy and Policy Development: We work tirelessly to influence policies and legislation that impact the Deaf community in Malawi. The Secretariat engages with government bodies, civil society organizations, and international partners to ensure that the rights of Deaf individuals are recognized and protected.

  • Program Implementation: The Secretariat oversees the design, implementation, and monitoring of MANAD’s programs, which are aimed at improving accessibility, education, and social inclusion for Deaf individuals across the country. This includes initiatives like the Malawi Sign Language Dictionary project, educational outreach, and health access campaigns.

  • Capacity Building: We are committed to empowering Deaf individuals and their families through training and capacity-building activities. The Secretariat organizes workshops, seminars, and training sessions to enhance the skills and knowledge of Deaf people, enabling them to advocate for their rights and participate fully in society.

  • Research and Documentation: The Secretariat conducts research and documents the challenges and successes of the Deaf community in Malawi. This information is crucial for informing our advocacy strategies and ensuring that our programs are evidence-based and impactful.

  • Communication and Outreach: The Secretariat manages MANAD’s communication channels, ensuring that our messages reach the right audiences. We maintain active engagement with our members, partners, and the public through various platforms, including our website, social media, and newsletters.

Our Team

Our dedicated team is made up of diverse professionals, each playing a crucial role in advancing our mission. Here’s an overview of who they are and what they do:

Executive Director- Mr Byson Chimenya

The Executive Director leads the organization, overseeing all operations, strategies, and programs. He is responsible for setting the overall vision, ensuring alignment with our mission, and building relationships with stakeholders, partners, and donors. The Executive Director also represents the organization in key meetings and events.

Acting Programmes Officer – Mr Malonje Phiri

The Programmes Officer manages the planning, implementation, and evaluation of our various projects. He ensure that each project is delivered on time, within scope, and within budget. His role involves coordinating with team members, monitoring progress, and reporting on outcomes. The Programmes Officer is also key in liaising with external partners and stakeholders.

Sign Language Interpreter – Vacant

Our Sign Language Interpreter provides essential communication support, ensuring that deaf individuals have full access to information and services. He facilitate communication between deaf and hearing individuals in various settings, including meetings, workshops, and public events. His role is vital in promoting inclusivity and understanding.

Communication Assistance/Information Officer -Mr  Duncan Fukulani

The Communication Assistance/Information Officer  manages communication strategies, oversees the dissemination of information, and maintains engagement with stakeholders. His responsibilities include drafting and distributing content, coordinating public relations, and supporting event management. Mr. Fukulani ensures effective communication both within MANAD and with external partners, enhancing the organization’s visibility and impact.

 

Finance Officer – Miss Edna Makonyola

The Finance Officer is responsible for managing the organization’s finances. This includes budgeting, financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. She handle all financial transactions, maintain accurate records, and provide financial advice to support decision-making. The Finance Officer plays a key role in ensuring the financial sustainability of our programs.

Youth and Women’s Coordinator – Mrs Magret David

The youth and Women’s Coordinator focuses on the needs and empowerment of deaf women and youth within the community. She develop and implement programs specifically designed to address the challenges faced by deaf women, promoting gender equality and supporting their personal and professional growth. Her role involves advocacy, outreach, and providing resources to help deaf women succeed.

MSL Research Assistant – Mr Nelson Sambanya and Mrs Meria Nkhwalala

The MSL (Malawi Sign Language) Research Assistant supports research projects related to sign language and deaf culture. They assist in gathering data, conducting surveys, and analyzing results to contribute to the development of resources such as sign language dictionaries and educational materials. Their work is critical in advancing the understanding and use of Malawi Sign Language.

Interns – Vacant

Our interns are aspiring professionals who support various aspects of the organization’s work while gaining valuable experience. They assist with administrative tasks, project support, research, and other activities as needed. Interns bring fresh perspectives and energy to our team, contributing to our mission while developing their skills.

Driver – Vacant

The Driver ensures the safe and reliable transportation of team members and materials. They are responsible for maintaining vehicles, planning routes, and ensuring that all transportation needs are met efficiently. The Driver plays a crucial role in supporting fieldwork and outreach activities.

Security Guards – Mr David Tembo and Mr Frank Kanyenga

Our Security Guards are tasked with protecting the organization’s premises, assets, and personnel. They monitor access to the building, conduct regular patrols, and respond to any security incidents. Their presence ensures a safe and secure environment for all team members and visitors.
