From July 29 to 31, 2024, the Malawi National Association of the Deaf (MANAD) actively participated in a critical meeting focused on disability-inclusive disaster risk management (DRM) and early warning (EW) messaging. Held in Salima District, this meeting was organized by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, in collaboration with the University of Malawi-UNIMA’s Centre for Language Studies and Sightsavers.
Objective of the Meeting
The session, generously funded by Sightsavers, was designed to bring together a diverse group of stakeholders to address the crucial issue of creating and disseminating disaster risk management and early warning messages in a manner that is inclusive of all vulnerable communities. This includes individuals with disabilities, women, and the elderly, who are often disproportionately affected during disaster events.
Participants and Discussions
The meeting convened experts from various fields, including language specialists, disability advocates, media professionals, translators, human rights activists, special needs educators, and civic education experts. The focus was on validating and refining strategies to ensure that DRM and EW messages are effectively tailored and communicated to those who are most at risk.
Key discussions revolved around the following areas:
- Inclusivity in Messaging: How to ensure that disaster risk and early warning messages are accessible and understandable to people with disabilities, including those with visual, auditory, and cognitive impairments.
- Practical Implementation: Strategies for implementing these inclusive messaging practices in real-world scenarios to improve preparedness and response for vulnerable communities.
- Collaboration and Coordination: Enhancing collaboration between various stakeholders to create a cohesive approach to disaster management that prioritizes the needs of all community members.
Impact and Future Steps
MANAD’s involvement in this meeting highlights its ongoing commitment to advocating for and advancing inclusive practices within disaster risk management. By participating in these discussions, MANAD contributes to shaping policies and strategies that ensure people with disabilities receive the necessary information to protect themselves during emergencies.
The insights gained from this workshop will be instrumental in developing more effective communication strategies that can be implemented in future disaster scenarios, ensuring that no one is left behind. MANAD continues to be a leading voice in promoting accessibility and inclusivity, aligning with its mission to support the rights and needs of people with disabilities in Malawi.
