By Malonje Phiri – MANAD Program Officer
Since 2022, the Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) has been supporting the Malawi National Association of the Deaf (MANAD) in developing a comprehensive Sign Language Interpreter Training Module Package. The package, comprising 19 modules, aims to standardize and professionalize sign language interpreter training in Malawi.
The development process was highly consultative and collaborative, involving various individuals, organizations, and partners. Special recognition goes to Charles Mtambo, Malonje Phiri, Lee Khwalala, Sekerani Kufakwina, Lucy Siwinda, Betty Wisiki-Kalitera, Funny Singini-Mvula, Maria Chale, Gloria Kampondeni, Stephano Maneya, and Mzondie Longwe for their expertise and dedication. Many of these contributors are experienced interpreters and MANAD members who ensured the content was relevant, practical, and inclusive.
Following the completion of the module package, TEVETA invited MANAD to develop a Sign Language Interpretation Training Manual. This manual is intended as a practical tool for conducting interpreter training sessions across the country. While the development began in March, it was not completed at that time.
From Saturday, 12th July to Wednesday, 16th July, a dedicated team—including two TEVETA representatives, two MANAD members, and two sign language interpreters—met to finalize the manual. The effort demonstrates the continued partnership and commitment to improving communication access for the Deaf community in Malawi.
