From July 29 to 31, 2024, the Malawi National Association of the Deaf (MANAD) actively participated in a critical meeting focused on disability-inclusive disaster risk management (DRM) and early warning (EW) messaging. Held in Salima District, this meeting was organized by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, in collaboration with the University of Malawi-UNIMA’s Centre for Language Studies and Sightsavers.
Objective of the Meeting
The session, generously funded by Sightsavers, was designed to bring together a diverse group of stakeholders to address the crucial issue of creating and disseminating disaster risk management and early warning messages in a manner that is inclusive of all vulnerable communities. This includes individuals with disabilities, women, and the elderly, who are often disproportionately affected during disaster events.
Participants and Discussions
The meeting convened experts from various fields, including language specialists, disability advocates, media professionals, translators, human rights activists, special needs educators, and civic education experts. The focus was on validating and refining strategies to ensure that DRM and EW messages are effectively tailored and communicated to those who are most at risk.
