The Malawi National Association of the Deaf (MANAD), in collaboration with the University of Notre Dame and the Ministry of Education, successfully conducted a two-day System Diagnostic Workshop in Mponela from the 13th to the 14th. This workshop was part of the Deaf Education Language of Instruction Transition in Education System (DELITES) study, which falls under the USAID Supporting Holistic and Actionable Research in Education (SHARE) Activity. The event was made possible through the generous financial support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The workshop brought together key stakeholders, including members of the deaf community, academics, deaf educationists, and researchers. The primary goal of the workshop was to map out the current policy and political landscape surrounding deaf education in Malawi and to identify system-level factors that impact the learning outcomes of deaf students.
During the workshop, participants engaged in meaningful discussions, sharing insights and experiences to better understand the challenges and opportunities within the deaf education system. This collaborative effort aimed to lay the groundwork for effective strategies and interventions that will enhance the educational experiences and outcomes for deaf students across the country.
The event underscored the importance of a coordinated approach to addressing the unique needs of deaf learners and the role that policy and systemic factors play in shaping their educational journey.
