Strengthening MANAD Branches/follow-up visits

From 3rd to 18th June 2016 and 18 July 2016 the secretariat conducted a follow up exercise on the Deaf Trainers who were deployed to the districts of Mwanza, Phalombe, Machinga, Mangochi, Nkhatabay, Dowa and Nkhotakota. 
During the exercise the follow up team managed to meet with the village headmen government officials and parents of the Deaf people where issues concerning the Deaf at district and village level were discussed
Challenges
In almost districts visited the followings were challenges found

  • Lack of Sign language skills and interpreters which is effecting communication.
  • Lack of understanding of some issues due to illiteracy among the deaf members
  • Some parents ill treating their deaf children such as denying them to socialize with other children.
  • Many Deaf people lack incentives to start small business
  • Lack of specialized teachers to teach deaf children
  • Some government officials are not aware of different challenges affecting the deaf

The following achievements were registered by the Deaf Trainer

  • All the DTs  completed their missions.
  • Three new clubs have been setup Monkey Bay in Mangochi, Mponela in Dowa and Bandawe in Nkhatabay.
  • Observation made by outside officials such as from headmen, District commissioner and headmaster Bandawe School for the Deaf said this is the most useful tool to reach the Deaf.
  • Beneficiaries stated that they leant a lot from the DTs particularly on topics on HIV/AIDs and fundraising.
  • As usual the DTs gained valuable experience working away from their own home districts. They said the local people welcomed and respected them more that their own districts.
  • DTs filled their report forms and presented their report during feedback.
  • Some deaf people are now able to defend for their rights.
  • The Deaf Trainer reported that there is interaction between the parents, government officials and guardian which is helping them to be aware of some things that affect the Deaf.
